Novec 1230 Fire Suppression System
Novec 1230 Fire Protection Fluid is a clean agent fire extinguishant (designed for the protection of commercial and industrial facilities that typically contain sensitive equipment, electronic data or materials that could be damaged or destroyed by conventional agents). It was developed as a halon replacement and hydrofluorocarbon (HFC) alternative. It belongs to a family of chemicals called halocarbons, a group which includes HFCs and fluoroketones. Novec 1230 is a fluoroketone, while chemical clean agents like FM-200 are HFCs (HFC-227ea). It has a global warming potential of less than 1 while HFCs typically have a global warming potential of more than 3000. Novec 1230 fluid has the highest margin of safety for human occupancy among clean agents, including inert gasses.
How does Novec 1230 work?
Novec 1230 puts a fire out before it starts by very quickly removing heat so that the fire cannot spread. In a normal system, the fluid is kept in cylinders pressurised with nitrogen. Fire detection sensors cause the release of the pressurised extinguishing agent when the fire is at its earliest stage, extinguishing it..
Within seconds, the full effect takes place. When dispersed with a properly designed system, Novec 1230 rapidly vapourises and distributes evenly in the protected space within 10 seconds. It removes the heat from the source of the fire, which interrupts the chemical reaction and within 40 seconds the fire is out. Since the extinguishing system using Novec extinguishes fire much faster than inert gas or CO2 based systems, fire damage anything in the protected area is kept to a minimum. Advantages of a Novec 1230 fire suppression system
Due to the low levels needed for fire suppression, fewer Novec cylinders and less storage space is needed, making the footprint for the fire suppression agent very small. It is stored as a liquid but discharged as a gas, using approximately 80% less floor space than inert gas systems.
It offers significant ecological advantages over other systems. It is an earth-friendly gas and poses no threat to the ozone layer. It does not fall into the Kyoto protocol for global warming gases.

- It makes good business sense to use Novec 1230 fluid because it is a sustainable, long-term technology. Not only does it meet today’s regulations, but it meets those of the foreseeable future. It is not subject to the HFC phasedown under the F-Gas Regulation in Europe or any global regulatory body, including the Montreal Protocol.
